Social Studies: Geography and Map Skills

We have been studying continents, oceans, mountains, rivers, and lakes.  Our test will be on Friday, October 15, 2010.  Please make sure you review the study guide your child has been bringing home each night.

Study Guide Information:


Why do people use maps?

Maps can be used to locate land and water features.
Maps and globes help people study the Earth
  
Maps Include:

Title – the name of the map
Map legend – symbols used on a map and what they stand for
Compass Rose – a symbol that shows direction (north, south, east, and west)

Words to Know:

Map – A drawing that shows what places look like from above and where they are located.

Equator – An imaginary ling around the middle of the Earth.

Continent – A large body of land on the Earth.

Ocean – A large body of salt water on the Earth.


The Seven Continents:
*Students must be able to locate the continents on maps and globes.

1.      North America
2.      South America
3.      Europe
4.      Asia
5.      Africa
6.      Australia
7.      Antarctica

The Five Oceans
*Students must be able to locate the oceans on maps and globes.

1.      Arctic Ocean
2.      Atlantic Ocean
3.      Indian Ocean
4.      Pacific Ocean
5.      Southern Ocean


Lakes and Rivers
*Students must be able to locate the lakes and rivers on maps and globes.

1.      James River
2.      Mississippi River
3.      Rio Grande
4.      The location of the Great Lakes


Mountains
*Students must be able to locate the mountains on maps and globes.

1.      Appalachian Mountains
